Nursing Policy Manual

Nursing Policy:  A definite course or method of action that guides and determines  present and future decisions regarding the safe delivery of patient care.  

Examples: Assessment of Patients, Employment of Licensed Nurses, Medication Administration, Transfers Within the Nursing Division 
Nursing Procedure Manual

Nursing Procedure: A series of steps followed in a regular, definite order to perform a given activity; the 'how-to' of a given activity. 

Examples: IV Insertion, Nasopharyngeal Airway Insertion, Transfusing Blood Products, Bladder Catheterization.
Nursing Protocol Manual

Patient Care Plans
Patient Care Plan: A document which outlines the care of a particular patient population including problems, outcome goals, and interventions; use for patients with expected stay > 48 hours.  Examples: Myasthenia Gravis, Renal Transplant, Trauma Patients (Adults).
Patient Care Statements

Clinical Pathway:  A tool to promote outcome-focused care within a pre-defined period of time.  Clinical Pathways promote a consistent approach to care for each given case type by reducing unnecessary variation in practice. Examples:  Cesarean Birth, Comfort Care, Heart Failure.
