6. Education is emphasized at the expense of training. | About 50% of our young people attend college and almost 35% graduate. Only 20% of our jobs require a college degree. This causes an oversupply of college graduates in many fields including math, science, and the social sciences. There is a shortage of vocational trained workers. | The oversupply of college graduates, many with average core intelligence, has resulted in a quarter of the college graduates earning less than the median high school graduate. | People with good vocational skills often earn more than the median college graduates. The economic return from education and training for people of different kinds and levels of special intelligence should be universally known. | Many students who would not have earned an adequate return on a college education will turn to vocational/technical training based on their special intelligence. Many of these people will earn a substantial return on their investment. |
7. Education fails to align educational tools with student abilities. | For most students, textbooks contain too much information spread over too many pages. Computer screens contain too little information and do not allow students to compare, contrast, and review instructional material without scrolling up, down, left, and right. | Textbooks are not used by students. Recent studies show that computer-assisted learning involved with the presentation of content does not increase learning and actually decreases learning. Only well designed, complex, process-centered programs improve learning. | Books should be simplified. Page layout should be an important part of book design. Reviews should be continuous. Computers in every room will not affect learning. Instead, the money should be spent to make sure children are conceived by healthy parents, born to a healthy mother, and raised in a proper environment. | Books will become more usable. Many learning tools such as computers, videotapes, flash cards, etc., will be made available at libraries to meet the needs of students with different learning styles. |
8. Education is dependent upon profit-oriented companies to design educational tools. | Textbooks, computers, and computer software must be large and pretty so revenue and profit are maximized. | Many new, innovative, and inexpensive tools are being developed. These are packaged with an obsolete text to insure profit margins. | Educational tools designed to enhance basic content should be inexpensive. This will provide funds for an investment in proven process-enhancing educational tools. | Innovative educational tools, designed to enhance all kinds of intelligence, will be developed to meet the needs of people of different levels of intelligence and learning styles. |
